National Defence Academy

The National Defence Academy (NDA) examination is one of the most prestigious and sought-after competitive exams in India. Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the NDA exam serves as a gateway for young individuals aspiring to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as commissioned officers. It offers a unique opportunity for candidates to embark on a challenging and rewarding career in the armed forces.

The entrance test of the NDA is held twice a year i.e. NDA-I and NDA-II. The first notification is issued in January and the second notification comes around June. The first entrance exam is conducted around April and the second around September. NDA application form comprises of two parts. The examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the interested candidates can apply online at the official website http://www.upsconline.nic.in

CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY

Nationality
A candidate must be an unmarried male and must be:-

  • A citizen of India, or

  • A subject of Nepal or

  • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st Jan, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

    Note.   Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii) (iii) & (iv) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Govt of India.
    Certificate of eligibility will not however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Age Limit, Sex and Martial Status
Only unmarried male candidates between the age group of 16½  to 19½  can join NDA.

Educational Qualification
For Army
12th Pass of the 10+2 pattern of School or equivalent examination by a State Education Board or a University.
For Air Force & Navy
12th Pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a State Education  Board or a University.
Note. Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 12+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

Physical/Medical Standards

  • Candidates must be physically and mentally fit according to prescribed physical standards/guidelines given in Notification.

  • To be deemed ‘Medically Fit’ a candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease /syndrome/disability likely to interfere with the efficient performance of military duties in any terrain, climate, season incl sea and air, in remote areas, in austere conditions with no medical aid.

  • Candidate also should be free of medical conditions which require frequent visit to medical facilities and use of any aid/drugs.


A candidate who has resigned or withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from any of the training academies of Armed Forces is not eligible to apply.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Conduct of Board

    The UPSC conducts written examination of the candidates and prepares a list of candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in the written examination as fixed by the Commission at their discretion. Such candidates shall appear before a Services Selection Board for Intelligence and Personality Tests where candidates for the Army/Navy wings will be assessed on Officers Potentiality and those for the Air Force in addition to the above will have to qualify the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS).

  • Services Selection Board (SSB)

    Two stage selection procedures based on Psychological Aptitude Test and Intelligence Test has been introduced at Selection Centres. All the candidates will be put through stage one tests on the first day of reporting at the Selection Centre. Only those candidates who qualify stage one will be admitted to the second stage/remaining tests.

  • Preparation of Merit List and Allotment of Service.

    Subject to the above conditions, the qualified candidates will then be placed in a single combined list on the basis of total marks secured by them in the written examination and Services Selection Board Test. The final allocation/selection to Army, Navy, Air Force will made upto the number of vacancies available (subject to the eligibility, medical fitness and merit cum preference of the candidates).

EXAM PATTERN

The entrance for National Defence Academy comprises of a written exam followed by and Intelligence and Personality test. The written test consists of two paper.
